COLLEGE OF COMPUTER SCIENCE NYCU
Department of Computer Science
The greatest invention of the 20th century - the computer - has seen its develop propelled forward in leaps and bounds since the birth of integrated circuit computers in 1964. The impact of widespread use of personal computers, the Internet, smartphones has rippled across various levels of society. Taiwan has also played an important role in the soaring into flight of global computer science technology, and has become an important country in terms of computer science industries.
The Department of Computer Science continuously pursues outstanding achievement in education and research, in order to realize the mission of nurturing professional talent in information technology for the country. Our department has more than 70 teaching staff with doctorate degrees, the most in the country, and we are an esteemed research university. Located close to the Hsinchu Science Park, we have close interactions with industry, so our students and teachers are fully in the know of trends in the industry, and our graduates are considered to be amongst the most popular in the field.
The Department of Computer Science has a list of extraordinary accomplishments; in the information technology field, the number of papers published by professors leads the rest of the country (in recent years, the number has consistently ranked in the top 20 to 25th globally), teachers and students won numerous awards in national and international computer and paper competitions, the department has many professors are fellows in international academic associations, and there are teaching agreements with many international firms. Many firms have already established joint research centers at our university, and our alumni are spread out in the far reaches of various companies and are elites in society.
In order to foster the specialization of knowledge in their field, also horizontally broaden a diverse intellect and capability, and be able to face the demands of rapidly transforming information society, the Department of Computer Science contains three programs: the Computer Science and Electrical Engineering Program, the Computer Science and Engineering Program, and the Network and Multimedia Engineering Program.
The Computer Science and Electrical Engineering Program emphasizes education of the integration of hardware and software, and the program syllabus covers professional training that includes computer architecture design, embedded systems design, System-on-Chip (SOC) design, Hardware-Software Co-design, Application-specific integrated circuit design, computer-aided Integrated Circuit automation design, medicinal and industrial application, knowledge of electronic circuits, computer architecture design.
Education in the Computer Science and Engineering Program covers professional education on topics including Operating Systems, Database Management System (DBMS), software engineering, Cryptography, artificial intelligence, machine learning, compiler, neural engineering applications, bioinformatics, biomedical imaging, signals analysis.
The Network and Multimedia Engineering Program offers education covering professional training on topics including overview of computer networks, website program design, Local Area Network, internet charter rules, wireless network and mobile computation, cyber security, digital content, 3D computer graphics and animation techniques, computer vision, virtual and augmented reality, multimedia data processing, video and audio compression searches.
Students in the various programs of our department are taught to emphasize the skills of designing programs. Most students work in technology industries including the computer, cellphone, computer gaming, network communication, IC design, digital content, wireless communications industries, or choose to continue deepening their knowledge by further studies; choosing the Department of Computer Science of NCTU means paving a very wide path for your future. In addition to using the extremely plentiful resources of our department, and horizontally collaborating with the electrical engineering and biotech schools of our university, pushing forward collaboration in course/teaching staff/research plans, in order to help students receive opportunities to engage in cross-field studies.
At the same time, the department is participating in various large-scale research plans, such as the Pursuing excellence in higher educational development plan of the Ministry of Education, the National Science and Technology Program for Telecommunications of the Ministry of Science and Technology, National broadband experimental network, the Technology Development Plan of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, and collaboration plans for joint Research & Development Centers with the Industrial Technology Research Institute and the Institute of Information Industry. Our department has intimate collaboration with leading international technology companies, with long-term collaboration relationships between Intel, HP、IBM、Cisco、Xilinx、EMC、Microsoft、Delta、HTC、ASUS、and MediaTek. These enable our department to constantly upgrade our laboratory equipment and educational content to be connected internationally and reach world-class standard.
